Weighted blanket Rule of thumb:

So lets say you are ready to pull the trigger: but which brand is best? There are tons of brands available online, on amazon, in specialty shops and homemade ones on Etsy. Each brand offers different colors, patterns or fabric options, Pick out one that works in your bedroom. Make sure you know how to wash the blanket and make sure its an appropriate weight.

The general rule of thumb is your blanket should be about 10% of your body weight. That means if you weigh 150 lbs your blanket will be about 15 lbs. There are not many queen or king sized weighted blankets, most are for the individual person, think throw blanket sized.

Benefits of weighted blankets:

The main concept behind the weighted blanket is that it provides a hug, support and extra weight to a sleeper. This is a non-pharm solution to many sleeping problems. Weighted blankets can help with both initiation of sleep AND sleep maintenance. This concept has long been used in kids with Autism and Sensory processing disorder and has now transitioned to mainstream use.

Many people love the extra weight and love how safe and relaxing it feels to be under a weighted blanket. And for the sake of honesty – I’m definitely one of those people!

Cons of a weighted blanket:

It can’t be used for kids under 30 pounds, they risk not being able to move sufficiently. So if your little guy struggles to sleep, sorry, this isn’t the solution for you. Other people with muscular or movement based disorders might want to review their cases with their medical providers.

The other main con is – Some people just don’t like it. Its hard for me fathom, but its true. Some people like sleeping under a light sheet and anything else they feel like they’re being strangled. My boyfriend (and clearly he has impeccable taste in girlfriends…) who I love dearly, is one of these people, so I know they exist.

So what now?

Well if you’re intrigued I urge you to order a weighed lap pad or throw blanket. They can be pricey upfront but I urge you to pull the trigger and order one! Its very easy to resell on craigslist or Fb marketplace. I’m confident you could get your money back, so don’t worry about that.
